Outfitting Instructions for Double Strap System Please refer to the pictures on the Installation Demo page. 1) Map Out The Entire Boat Before Any Sanding or Gluing: Make sure hull is clear and dry, if not, wipe down with rubbing alcohol. Place pedestal with backbone at 7" behind center (for symmetrical boats) picture 1L, for all other boats, check with the manufacturer for saddle placement, center it and mark it with a china marker. Picture 1R With pedestal in place (not glued) sit in it and place the knee cups to your desired location. The wider apart, the more stable you will feel picture 3L. The pads should extend approx. 1" past your knees. The thicker sidewall on the cups should be on the inside of your knees. Mark out the location of the knee cups (do not glue). Mark the side of the boat directly across from both ankles (picture 3R). With the pedestal still in place, put the crotch anchor under the pedestal (picture 2L). The metal sliders should be centered to the pedestal with the outer edge of the 2" webbing at the front outer edge of the pedestal (picture 2R). You can now remove the pedestal and knee cups. Take the knee straps and center it to the top mark of the knee cup (picture 5L). Make sure the strap itself does not drop below the marked (top) line of the knee cup. It is ok for part of the vinyl to be under the line. It is important that you point the strap towards the slider of the crotch anchor. This ensures a uniform pull on the strap. At the side of the boat where you marked your ankle location (picture 4R), measure how far down from the gunwales you want to place your ankle anchor. The further down in the boat, the more secure you will be in the boat. It is very important that you do not place the anchor past your ankle bone! This will inhibit your feet from sliding out of your toe pegs and greatly increases the chance of entrapment. Mark out the ankle anchors with the straps pointing towards the crotch anchor sliders (picture 4L). Note: It is advisable that you mark the pads "right" & "left" with arrows pointing towards the front of the boat. Your boat is now mapped out, you can remove everything (picture 5R). Wipe down the glue side of the patches with acetone (picture 8L). 2) Prepping the Boat: Within the marked areas of your patches, wipe down with acetone without removing the lines. If you are working with an older hull or doing a refit make sure you remove that thin layer of dirt or glue (it may not look dirty, but it is!) picture 8L. If there are any marked lines within your sanding or gluing area of your patch, remove it. Do not wipe past the lines, it will leave a mark on the hull. Your boat is now ready to be glued. 3) Gluing Process: Vinyl Cement Apply a thin layer of cement on both the boat and the patches, let dry for 10 minutes. This allows for the solvent in the glue to evaporate (picture 8R). Heat both surfaces with a heat gun or hair dryer (picture 9L), this will re-activate the glue. Apply patch and rub down with roller (you can use a screen door roller) picture 10R. Stabond UK148 (for re-fits and old boats with multiple patches) Mix half the can following instructions, apply a thin layer to both surfaces,
let dry for 2 hours. After all the patches are in place, you can now glue in the pedestal and knee cups using flammable contact cement. Don't forget to wipe down gluing surface with acetone before gluing (pictures 10R, 11R, 11L). The contoured thigh straps will go through both metal sliders on the crotch anchor and attach to the knee strap and (don't forget to double the strap back on the knee strap slider or it will slip under pressure) adjust accordingly. For proper fitting of the thigh straps, the suspension tab should be on the high side (towards body) of your leg. Let glue cure for a day before you take it out on whitewater. 4) Suspending the Thigh & Knee Straps: Thigh Straps Just under the gunwale, 6 inches in front of the ankle anchor attachment point (not the complete patch), drill 2 3/8" holes ½" apart. Loop the bungi cord on the thigh strap through the front hole, then back through the rear hole. The end of the bungi should be in the boat, place the cordlock on the cord and adjust the amount of tension on the thigh strap (picture 13L). Note: The small tab on the thigh strap should be on the upper side of the thigh strap, if not, switch them around. The thigh straps should now be suspended for quick re-entry into the boat. Knee Straps: Feed the bungi cord from the knee strap forward through one of the bag cage loops and double it back through the cordlock, adjust tension (picture 13R). Enjoy your new outfitting system! |
